Seedship modding policy

Some people have expressed an interest in making their own mods for Seedship, so I think it’s time to officially state my policy on modding and put out some guidelines:

  • I’m happy for fans to create mods for non-commercial release. If you’re a company or want to use Seedship as part of a commercial project, please contact me to discuss licensing.
  • If your objective is to learn Twine or to learn game programming generally, I strongly recommend you pick a different example project. Seedship has some awkward coding practices that honestly make me cringe now I look back on them with more experience, and I don’t want people to pick up bad habits from it.
  • I won’t be able to provide any help, either technical or creative. If you have any trouble, I recommend you give up and make your own, simpler Twine game.
  • If you still want to mod Seedship after reading those points, email me for the source code.
  • Keep the version number of the version you’re modifying, while also adding the version number for your mod. So if you’re modifying version 1.3.6 and calling your mod AwesomeMod, and your mod is ready for its first full release, your version number is “1.3.6 / AwesomeMod 1.0”.
  • Keep the original credits page, while also adding “Modified by (your name)”.
  • If you’re adding new planet features or end-game results, or generally changing anything that would be included in the share link, you should remove the share links from the end of the game and the high score detail pages. Otherwise people will follow links to the base game, which doesn’t know about the content you’ve added, and it’ll either show the result incorrectly or show an error.
  • Modifying the mobile app version of the game would be a whole level of complexity on top of modifying the web game, and I honestly recommend you don’t bother. Note that the web version of the game as displayed in a mobile browser looks almost exactly the same as the app version.
  • These guidelines also cover unofficial fan translations, if you want to attempt to translate Seedship into a different language. (In my opinion translating Seedship would be prohibitively difficult, and certainly a lot harder than translating an equivalent amount of non-interactive text, but if you really want to try, go for it.)
